End 2010 Update

Hi everyone,

At our recent Xmas party, I spoke about several things that happened in 2010 and about some things that will be happening in 2011. Here is a summary of what I spoke about.

The start of 2010 saw us struggling with court hire, which resulted in us having 6 months of Monday nights and 6 months of Sunday afternoons. This situation has not changed, and we expect it to continue for the foreseeable future. We are continuing to look into better options, and will keep you informed as things progress.

Our blog/website was setup in early 2010 to help keep everyone informed during our uncertain court hire times. Since then, it has become our main means of communicating news to everyone. One of our newer players, Andrew D. was the 100th player to subscribe.

At last year’s Xmas party, I announced that we were looking into affiliating with a NSW Badminton Association. We didn’t progress it any further during 2010 due to other commitments, but our situation has now changed. Due to changes to the RWSC (Tempe venue) court hire contracts, we will be required to provide our own Public Liability insurance as of January 2011. The most cost effective way to achieve this is to affiliate with a large badminton association, which will automatically provide all members with insurance cover.

We have decided that the Sydney Badminton Association is our best option, and have begun negotiations with them. We expect to have full details of our affiliation plans for you by the end of the year. What I can tell you now, is that there will be a small annual membership cost to each player, and that we will need to organise memberships quickly (before the end of January).

2010 saw us having another successful internal competition with record numbers of competitors. Our 2011 internal competition has already been booked for Sunday 22nd May, so please add this date to your calendars.

2010 also saw a number of our players head overseas to the Gay Games in Cologne, and they returned with several medals – well done!

Of course, the big event for 2011 is the 2nd Asia Pacific Outgames in Wellington in March, and again, many of our players will be heading there to compete.

That’s all for now, more soon.
